Introducing thirdweb 4.0: built for the next generation of internet products

The internet has been shifting right below our feet.

  • A rideshare driver or delivery person gets paid instantly through a platform like Uber or DoorDash
  • A TikTok creator sells merch, subscriptions, or receives tips turning attention into income
  • AI recently joined the digital economy autonomously paying for APIs, compute, data, and more

What started as a network for exchanging information has become a network for transacting value. And more and more people are finding ways to create value on the internet.

But you can’t build keep building these digital economies on yesterday’s tools.

Our next iteration: thirdweb 4.0

When we started thirdweb a little over four years ago, we set out to create the most intuitive and easy to use suite of web3 development tools to enable a trustless, permissionless, and open internet.

We built tools to create and deploy smart contracts, interfaces to interact, wallets to onboard users to your app, and the infrastructural glue to hold it all together. And during that time we served thousands of developers and businesses all paving the way for the next generation of applications built on the blockchain.

Throughout, we identified several problems: creators and apps wanted to retain more of the value they generated, businesses sought better ways to reward their users, users needed simple ways to transfer and utilize those rewards, and AI agents also require a way to participate in this economy.

So, we are simplifying our tool suite to six primitives to focus on solving these.

  • Tokens: Launch tokens with liquidity and tap into existing markets
  • Bridge: Swap and bridge tokens to spend or transact on any network
  • x402: Internet native payments for apps, agents, and APIs
  • AI: Interface for reading and writing to the blockchain via natural language
  • Wallets: Wallets for users, agents, and developers to read and transact.
  • Gateway: Interface for blockchain connectivity and data access

This new simplified suite is everything you need to build an in-app economy where you and your users are able to retain and transact value seamlessly across the internet.

What’s New For You

As part of 4.0, you will see this new simplification reflected across our documentation, dashboard, APIs, and more.

On dashboard, you will see the following six categories when you create a project each with their own analytics view and configuration settings:

On documentation, we are simplifying our view down Wallets, x402, Bridge, Token, and AI. Archived documentation is still temporarily accessible while we slowly wind down services. You can access archived documentation by scrolling down on the main portal page.

We encourage all users to start or migrate to api.thirdweb.com as the default API service with all the endpoints you need to start building.

Key Product Changes to Know

We are formally deprecating or merging support for the following products:

  • Payments is merging into Bridge with all UI components and services moving over into the Bridge dashboard and documentation. You can no longer create hosted payment links but existing hosted links will be supported until December 15, 2025.
  • Insight will be re-introduced as indexer and abstracted into the API, SDK, and UI components instead of servicing as its own API.
  • Transactions is being moved into Wallets and re-introduced as Server Wallets with all settings and configurations within the Wallets dashboard and documentation.
  • Vault is no longer a standalone product and has been merged into Server Wallets as a configuration setting.
  • Account Abstraction is now formally re-branded as Gas Sponsorship and is merged into Wallets.
  • Contracts is no longer the preferred way to deploy any token contracts and we encourage users to use the Tokens dashboard to deploy ERC-20s, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 tokens. Existing contracts deployed will be honored and accessible in the UI for users who have previously deployed them.

More details on each change will be followed up with in corresponding changelogs. Please anticipate more detailed communications around product sunset dates.
